The Vandegrift ViperBots sent three teams — 6209 Venom, 6299 QuadX and 7161 Hydra — to the FIRST Tech Challenge South Super-Regional Championship at the Classic Center in Athens, Ga. on March 23-25. Hydra and QuadX advance to the FTC World Championship competition in Houston April 19-22.

Since the 2011-2012 school year, this year marks the sixth consecutive year the ViperBots have sent one to two teams to the FTC World Championships.

Last week 72 teams from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Georgia were vying for one of 36 spots to the FTC World Championship.

“This competition was easily the hardest we’ve ever been to,” said Linnea May, QuadX project manager and a senior with four years in robotics under her belt. “I’m really proud of how the ViperBots worked with what we had and how well we represented Vandegrift and the FTC Alamo Region.”

FTC competitions consist of a subjective component (judging for award categories) and an objective component (robot performance on the field in competition). Of the 36 teams advancing to worlds, half will advance through winning an award and half will advance based on robot performance on the field.

QuadX captured the prestigious PTC Design Award at Super-Regionals which represents industrial design at its best, striking a balance between form, function and aesthetics.

Joining QuadX at worlds this year will be Hydra, advancing by way of their robot performance as the second seed, Finalist Alliance, for the entire event through the elimination and final rounds.

“I’m so proud of our team for all that we’ve accomplished this year,” said senior Dana Faist, Hydra project manager. “There’s definitely been some struggles but we were able to overcome them and perform our best. We are all so excited to be going to worlds this year.”
